Ignoring the obvious sarcasm at the start of the quoted post, I feel compelled to point out how many threads were started regarding the Snowball Fight. I'd also like to point out that a fair few people have taken to developing their own sporting events in game, via races and the awesome Dodgeball competition.
It doesn't matter what the sport is, or how it's adapted into Guild Wars, all that matters is if it's competitive in a way that people will enjoy.

Well I grew up playing American Football. I despised true football. Oddly enough, recently I was playing a soccer game on my brothers PS2 and I loved it. So now I am wtching the World Cup. I'm interested. It is a worldwide thing. Remebmer not everyone celebrates christmas. So to say it's a worldwide event isn't true. BTW It's tied 1-1 in the Germany vs Costa Rica game. I don't know all the teams in the world cup so I'm not sure who to root for. I know U.S. is ranked 5th but I don't know. Maybe I'll root for Japan. We'll see.
Edit: 2-1 Germany

Last thing GW needs is a soccer event. That's dumb.

Meh...I can't stand football, so I don't mind the lack of an event like this. Besides, some aspects of that industry really disgust me.
An example of this is the work done by talent scouts. Those guys pull teenagers out of school a long time before graduation because they seem to know how to handle a ball. What happens if they get injured at an early point in their career and sit there without an education?
I bet they'd feel like doing a penalty kick with the talent scout's head.

Soccer World Event on GW? Think of all the abuse that the black characters will face!! Brazil is like the Pheonix Suns of soccer. All offense and no def. My money is on Italy FTW!

The dodge ball is a cool idea, but since there are no physical ball, though I'm not sure how soccer would work.

soccer in Guild Wars? brilliant!
I thought all the in-game event is based on real-life holidays and events.

They aren't doing anything for the WC. They didn't do anything for the Olypmics. They didn't do anything for the Super Bowl.
But according to the OP since A.net is based in the US (though I'd like to point out it is owned by a Korean company) it is somehow discriminatory to Europeans and football/soccer fans everywhere.
Right... grow up.

Even Americans don't have a holiday for their most loved sport
Ok it would be nice and fun for finding all kinda neat things to celebrate and special things to keep and add to our non rune adding helms but if this is all about America not recognizing soccer being the great sport that it is...just know that we don't have a holiday for any sport what so ever... The Super Bowl...our biggest playoff for American Football - no holiday...held on weekend...that is it. So I really doubt it was meant to offend or dismiss your cherished sport...I just don't think they even "thought" about it. I actually think they need to focus on improving the game's next chapter...if they are too busy fixing all our vents about Factions, do you really think it is necessary to vent that they are catering to your whims too? They are handling the Tourneys too as we speak...
If ANYTHING - they should have a FLAG/pennant of the top ranking guilds that we can wave in city to cheer for our favorite GUILD trying to win, better yet find a way to make it seem like there is a viewing stand in the hall which they fight so they can see people cheer them on with the pennants
